When many think of someone who has ADHD they think of hyper, overactive little boys. While that definitely can be a symptom, for many girls and women the hyperactivity is in their brains and therefore often goes unrecognized and undiagnosed.
Coach Jody Long was not diagnosed with ADHD until she was thirty-five. With that diagnosis the ways she had been all growing up started to make sense. She now helps other women with ADHD come to peace with their diagnosis as well as realize it’s one of their greatest superpowers. If you have ADHD or think you might, you will definitely come away with a feeling of hope after listening to this episode.
Takeaways:
*A huge part of coaching is that you are not your brain and you get to decide whether you believe it or not.
*ADHD is a neuro-developmental disorder of the brain mostly in the executive function of the brain. Aka- the management part of your brain.
*ADHD brains have less dopamine.
*ADHD manifests differently in women. Instead of hyper activity externally, the hyperactivity is in the brain.
*ADHD women are often very intelligent and creative and can use that to compensate so their diagnosis flies under the radar.
*We need to start knowing and accepting our brains exactly as they are and not caring what others think but come up with some creative solutions.
*While you may feel an ADHD diagnosis would be something you wouldn’t want, it can actually be an unseen superpower
*When you learn to track all the amazing things you do, you will start to know your own power.
*It’s important to call out thoughts that make sense because we have a brain that is trying to keep us safe.
Discussion Questions:
- Have you been diagnosed with ADHD and if so, what are your thoughts about that diagnosis?
- What do you think and feel about having a diagnosis that many would say is negative actually be the very thing that is your superpower?
- If you are a member of the Church, what additional cultural factors have been difficult for you that coincide with your ADHD?
