I want you to think back to the last time you got sick – throw up sick. How did you feel right before you threw up and right after? Most likely you felt horrible right before you got sick and hopefully you felt better right after. Thoughts that swirl in our head can be just like a stomach bug. They make us feel terrible if we try to keep them in our brain, and not until we get them out of our head, do we finally feel better.

Today on the podcast I discuss with coach Joey Mascio the importance of taking the unproductive thoughts swirling in our head out and putting them somewhere where we will not only feel better but can do something about those thoughts. The coaching tool being discussed today is Thought Downloads.

Takeaways:

How to Apply the tool – Thought Downloads:

  1. Pick a topic that you have been thinking a lot about.
  2. Set a timer for 3, 5, or 10 minutes.
  3. When the timers going, write and write all the thoughts that come up for you. Don’t edit your thoughts, worry about spelling, or judge them in any way.
  4. When time is up, look over your thoughts to see what you notice, if there are any repeating thoughts or patterns.
  5. Then ask yourself the following questions:
    1. Why am I thinking this thought?
    2. Do I want to keep thinking this thought?
    3. What is the benefit of thinking this thought?
  6. Repeat daily.

*In doing a thought download it’s important to filter out the fact thoughts vs. the emotion driven thoughts.

*In the October 2016 General Conference, President Nelson said, “ The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives.
