It’s probably safe to say that women in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints love two things very much – the gospel and their children. But what happens when those two things come into conflict with one another? There has been a lot of discussion in recent years on how parents of children who are LGBTQ can continue to love and support their children while still holding fast to the truths of the gospel. Coach Jenie Hunter has created a community of support and hope for these mothers. Come listen to today’s podcast as she shares how moms can become “touch points of Christ” for their children and have meaningful relationships with their children all while holding true to the gospel and its teachings. This is an episode you don’t want to miss. It’s full of hope and love and so much light. You will truly have your heart filled by taking a listen.

Takeaways:

*When you have a child who comes out as identifying as LGBTQ, your faith has to grow up.

*Completing a checklist of things to do in our gospel journey, does not bring us closer to Christ.

*When your child comes out as LGBTQ, you have to learn to co-parent with Heavenly Father and parent the individual instead of a set group of guidelines.

*Most LGBTQ children will step away from the Church and that is when your home needs to become the Church that can nurture their spirituality.

*If your child comes out it will put you on a faith journey where you have to re-examine your faith.

*You can’t go through the process of having an LGBTQ child without being changed for the better if you are doing it with the Lord.

*There are lots of ways and paths to grow closer to Christ. There isn’t’ one set way.

*As a parent of LGBTQ children we are much like the children of Israel who wandered in the wilderness for 40 years. Their wondering was necessary for their learning and growth. As a parent to these children your wondering is necessary for you to learn and grow as is necessary for this new path of life with an LGBTQ child.

*Our role as mothers of LGBTQ children simply means doing one thing – loving them. The Lord will do the heavy lifting. We don’t need to worry about that.

*You can’t get to a higher version of yourself without going through the hard times.

*When you have a child come out as LGBTQ, one thing that seems to happen is that the parent/family can feel a loss of community in the Church.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Are you a mom whose child has come out as LGBTQ? What support do you need to move forward in love with the gospel and your child?
  2. What are somethings that give you hope and have helped you make peace with the teachings of the gospel as well as still having love and a great relationship with your LGBTQ child?
  3. What is the one piece of advice you would give another mother going through a similar situation?
